Merino vs Synthetic: The Real Comparison for Snow Sports

One begins with a naturally renewable fibre. The other begins largely with fossil fuels. Both can be made into base layers, but they do not perform in the same way or leave the same legacy.

Is merino really worth the investment for snow sports?

At Kunama, our answer is yes. But we also believe you deserve a transparent comparison, including the limited practical reasons synthetic fibres are sometimes used in technical garments.

The honest answer: Synthetic fibres can dry faster after saturation and tolerate repeated abrasion. Those are limited technical characteristics, not a recommendation. For a next-to-skin snow layer, Kunama chooses merino for its temperature regulation, moisture management, odour resistance, comfort and renewable natural origin.

What Are Synthetic Base Layers Made From?

Most synthetic base layers are made from polyester, nylon, acrylic or blends containing these fibres. They are generally manufactured from fossil-fuel resources such as oil and natural gas.

Their environmental impact does not end when the garment leaves the factory. Synthetic textiles can release tiny plastic fibres during manufacturing, everyday wear and washing. These microplastics can enter waterways and persist in the environment.

Recycled polyester can reduce demand for newly manufactured plastic, but it remains a plastic fibre. It can still shed microfibres and is not biodegradable simply because its source material has been recycled.

How Merino Works with Your Body

A day on the mountain is rarely one continuous level of effort.

You warm up on a descent, cool quickly on a chairlift, work harder while carrying equipment and then stop again for lunch. The layer against your skin must cope with those changes without leaving you clammy or cold.

Merino can absorb moisture vapour before it becomes liquid sweat. Wool can hold this moisture within the fibre while retaining air within its structure, helping reduce the cold, clammy feeling that can follow periods of activity. This helps maintain a more stable environment next to the skin as your effort and the weather change.

This is why merino is so well suited to skiing and snowboarding. It is not simply insulation. It helps your body remain comfortable across the stop-start rhythm of a snow day.

The Limited Technical Role of Synthetic Fibres

Transparency matters to us, so we will not ignore the practical reasons synthetic fibres are used in some technical garments.

Synthetic fibres can dry faster once saturated and can tolerate more repeated rubbing against rough surfaces. These characteristics can be useful in specific high-friction applications.

They do not make synthetic the better choice overall, particularly when environmental impact is considered. Most conventional synthetic fibres are made from fossil-fuel resources, can shed persistent plastic microfibres and do not naturally biodegrade.

For a layer worn directly against your skin, Kunama chooses merino for the balance of temperature regulation, moisture management, odour resistance, comfort and environmental responsibility.

The Difference You Can Smell

Synthetic fibres can retain body oils and odour-producing compounds. This is why a synthetic sports top can begin to smell after a relatively short period of activity.

Merino is naturally odour resistant. Its fibre structure helps capture odour compounds until the garment is washed.

That can mean more wears between washes, less clothing to pack for a snow trip and less water and energy used for garment care.

Natural Does Not Mean Impact-Free

Every garment has an environmental footprint, including wool. Responsible sourcing, animal welfare, land management, garment quality and useful life all matter.

Kunama base layers use superfine 18.5-micron Australian merino wool, chosen for its exceptionally soft next-to-skin comfort, including for many people with sensitive skin. Under our supplier agreement, the wool is RWS-certified, with our manufacturing partner’s current scope certificate covering women’s apparel production. Kunama garments carry Woolmark certification, and our supplier holds OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, Product Class I certification covering 100% wool and specified wool-blend garments. Together, these standards support responsible wool sourcing, fibre quality and testing against limits for harmful substances.

We choose merino because it is renewable, naturally biodegradable under suitable conditions and exceptionally suited to life against the skin in changing alpine conditions.

Why Kunama Base Layers Are 100% Merino

Every Kunama base-layer top and legging is made from 100% Australian merino wool. We do not blend nylon, polyester or spandex through these garments.

Our socks are the only exception.

Kunama socks contain 85% Australian merino wool, 13% nylon and 2% spandex, using fine 18.5-micron merino. Socks experience repeated friction inside ski boots and need additional structure, stretch and shape recovery to stay securely in place.

The nylon provides strength and abrasion resistance. The spandex helps the socks stretch and return to shape, reducing slipping, bunching and falling down.

We use those fibres for a clear functional reason, and we disclose the complete composition. Australian merino remains the dominant fibre.

We prefer natural Australian merino, use synthetic fibre only where it performs a necessary function, and tell you exactly why it is there.

Is Merino Wool Worth the Investment for Snow Sports?

Synthetic fibres can offer a lower purchase price, faster drying after saturation and greater abrasion resistance, but those characteristics come with environmental trade-offs Kunama does not overlook.

If you want natural temperature regulation, lasting next-to-skin comfort, fewer washes, less odour and a renewable fibre rather than a fossil-fuel-based one, merino is worth the investment.
